About

Kirk Hovenga is a Midwest-born artist whose work is deeply connected to the landscapes and atmosphere of the region. Born in Cedar Rapids and raised in Davenport, Iowa, he developed an early appreciation for art. Encouraged by his high school art teachers he pursued a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Iowa.

During his college years, Kirk immersed himself in both traditional and contemporary artistic influences. A pivotal experience was attending colloquium lectures, where artists, writers, and poets shared their insights. Frequent visits to the Art Institute of Chicago broadened his artistic vision, while working at a local art supply store kept him connected to the creative community. After earning his BFA with a minor in photography, he worked as a studio assistant for Byron Burford who was the Head Professor and Curator for the University of Iowa’s art collection.

In the years that followed, Kirk worked in the art supply industry, touring manufacturing facilities and collaborating with top executives and technicians. While steadfastly adhering to traditional techniques, he embraced evolving technology, seamlessly merging innovation with time-honored methods. While living in cities like Kansas City, Cleveland and Phoenix, he remained active in the arts, exhibiting nationally and drawing inspiration from diverse artistic communities.

In 2007, Kirk moved to Dumont, Iowa, a small farming community where he spent time as a child visiting his grandparents. The quiet surroundings allowed him to focus on his work, deepening his connection to the land. With a renewed interest in landscapes, he continued to explore the ever-changing qualities of light, space, and memory in his paintings.
