About
Kirk is an Iowa-born fine artist whose landscapes are rooted in his Midwestern upbringing and close observation of rural environments. Working in traditional oils, he explores changing light, season, distance, and memory in paintings ranging from intimate small-format to larger compositions.
As a student at the University of Iowa, Hovenga was exposed to visiting artists, writers and poets, broadening his understanding of visual expression. After graduation, he worked as a studio assistant to artist and University of Iowa professor Byron Burford.
Hovenga’s subsequent professional experience in the fine-art materials industry deepened his knowledge of traditional painting materials and techniques. During the years that followed, he exhibited his artwork in galleries and juried exhibitions while living in several regions of the United States.
In 2007, Hovenga settled in a farming community in Iowa where the agricultural landscape renewed his interest in atmosphere, spatial depth and the character of changing light, while strengthening his concentration on oil painting. From 2019–2020 his work was featured in a traveling solo museum exhibition.
Hovenga resides in Northern Virginia. His current work draws on both Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic landscapes, continuing his exploration of place, weather, light, and the emotional resonance of familiar environments.
